METHOD
Why It Works

Pressing the sandwich melts the cheese and crisps the bread at the same time. Mustard and pickles cut through the rich pork and ham for the classic Cuban balance.

Quick Fixes

Bread not crisping: press firmly and use enough butter on the outside.

Filling falling out: don't overfill; a thin even layer presses best.

Ingredients

Protein

2 cups shredded or sliced roasted pork, homemade or leftover
8 oz deli ham, thinly sliced

Topping

8 oz Swiss cheese, sliced
½ cup dill pickle slices

Sauce

¼ cup yellow mustard
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

Pasta & Grains

1 loaf Cuban or French bread, split

How to Make It

1

Split the bread in half lengthwise.

2

Spread mustard over both cut sides.

3

Layer the ham, pork, Swiss cheese, and pickles on the bottom half.

4

Close the sandwich with the top half.

5

Butter the outside of the bread.

6

Heat a skillet or panini press over medium heat.

7

Press the sandwich and cook 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden and the cheese melts.

8

Slice into portions.

9

Serve warm.

Store

Best fresh; store the components separately up to 3 days.

Reheat

Reheat in a skillet or panini press to re-crisp.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before you start cooking.

• Can I use pulled pork instead of sliced roast?
Yes. Shredded pulled pork works well, though traditional Cubanos use sliced roast pork.
• What bread is traditional?
Cuban bread is classic; a French baguette or sturdy sub roll works too.
• Do I need a panini press?
No. A skillet with a heavy pan or plate pressed on top works just as well.
